DEGENRING SCHOLARSHIP
The Degenring Scholarship is named after Anna Degenring and is
intented to support women through their undergraduate seminary degree.
The recepients must be a member in good standing at an American Baptist Church in NJ,
be at least a sophmore, and provide proof of eligibility to apply for the scholarship.
Past recepients include: The Rev. Bernedett Glover-Williams, Rev. Dee Dee Turlington,
and The Rev. April Van Ness. Also remember that the amount we award is dependant upon
the amount of contributions sent to our treasurer. Contributions may be sent at
anytime to our state treasurer earmarked as Degenring Scholarship Fund. To receive
information, please contact the Degenring Coordinator through this website.
Since our conference when we had no candidates, we have given two awards.
The first is to Suleima Rosario, a recent graduate of seminary but now going to nursing
school in preparation to becoming a medical missionary. The second is to
Melissa Doyle-Waid, a seminarian in need of financial support for her internship
with the regional office. Keep those gifts coming in—there are many women we can
help.
Please pray that God will let you know your part in giving.
It is never to early to send in candidate names for scholarships!
We lost our wonderful Degenring Scholarship Chairwoman,
Rev. Marion Phillips on Nov. 22nd, 2008.
President Gail is currently working on establishing a new committee to handle this
important work. Keep your gifts coming in. In today’s economy, support of women going
into training for God’s work is even more important.

IMPORTANT RECORDS
If you are a former state officer or even Association officer and have official
records such as minutes, By-Laws, financial records, Degenring recipient lists, etc.
we request you also notify our President or your Association President and make
arrangements to get them to us. Hopefully, we will secure a place
to archive them at our ABCNJ Headquarters in Hamilton Square.
Now is your chance to get rid of things. Please review them to make sure they
are worthwhile—we don’t want to just assume your clutter.
IMPORTANT HAITI RELIEF INFORMATION FROM NATIONAL
From: HOLMSTROM, Virginia <Virginia.Holmstrom@abc-usa.org>
Subject: Peggy, Haiti response, and need for CWS kits
To:
Date: Thursday, January 14, 2010, 1:05 PM
Dear members of the national AB Women's Ministries board and AB GIRLS NLT,
1. Board alumna Janet Coleman from Columbus, Ohio, emailed an
update on Peggy Burke,
national coordinator of Mission & Service Ministries, who was in Haiti when
the earthquake happened on Tuesday. Janet writes: "Peggy Burke and
the group she went with are sleeping on the ground. The orphanage dorm was destroyed.
One woman with her is injured and needs to be transported state-side."
2. We've featured on our AB Women's Ministries homepage at
www.abwministries.org how AB women and girls can
respond to the emergency in
Haiti.
3. One important way to respond is by organizing in your
region/state
quick replenishment of Church World Service kits. Here
is the word from Lisa Rothenberger, ABC World Relief Officer:
"We held an ecumenical conference
call yesterday with CWS. During that call we learned that CWS' inventory of
kits in New Windsor is down to just one container's worth of kits (8700 blankets,
3870 baby kits and 25,000 hygiene kits). Those kits will be packed up and shipped
to Haiti as soon as possible. CWS is appealing to all denominatioins to encourage
churches, women's groups, etc. to provide more kits--as they are greatly needed.
Is this an appeal that you could share through ABWM?
CWS has asked that everyone follow the normal
procedures of preparing kits and shipping them to New Windsor. The kits most in
need are the hygiene kits and the baby kits. CWS is NOT asking for
school kits at this time.
Here's the link to the CWS site about the kits....

Here's the link specifically about the hygiene kits

Here's the link specifically about the baby kits

As always, CWS and I appreciate any help you
can give to the generation of more kits. With CWS inventory so low, this almost could
not have happened at a worse time.
Blessings,
Lisa
